Laparoscopic General Surgery

Dr. Chua and his former partner Dr. Rolando Mendiola, did the first laparoscopic gall bladder removal in the Mid- West in December of 1989. The minimally invasive technique was then utilized in the removal of the appendix; repair of groin hernias; incisional hernia; hiatal hernia; surgery on the stomach and bile ducts.

They did the first bypass of the bile duct to the duodenum in the United States in 1993 and the first laparoscopic stomach stapling in the USA in Feb 1993. Spleen removal and surgery on the liver including cryosurgery of liver tumors were also performed. They also did the first colon removal in Wisconsin in 1995.

Highlights of their achievements
  • They did the first bypass of the stomach to the small intestine in USA in Oct, 1990.
  • First colon removed laparoscopically in Wisconsin in 1991.
  • First laparoscopic rectopexy in the USA for rectal prolapse in September of 1991.
  • First to Bypass of the bile duct to the duodenum laparoscopically in the USA in Feb 1992.
  • First laparoscopic stomach stapling in the USA in Feb 1993.
  • Spleen removal, surgery to the adrenal glands and on the liver including cryosurgery of liver
    tumors were also performed laparoscopically.
